One Month Later.

It’s been just over a month since my friend Robert Klug passed away. I still can’t believe that he’s not here.

On Sunday, June 14th, 2020, Rob had his final paddle off. It was beautiful! His friends and family from the surfing and pinball world showed up in droves. Stories were shared; someone mentioned that Rob’s favorite arcade game as a youth was the incredible Bagman (created by Valadon Automation, licensed to Stern), and how the title characters cry of “ay yi yi!!” became a running joke to them.

I didn’t paddle out because I’m ginger and inept. I tried to capture some of the vibes, and I hope the video below does it justice.

The music is from an amazing album called “Sea to Shore” from a one man band called “School of Language”. It’s an incredible album from start to finish. Rob and I never got to the point in our relationship to discuss music, but from what I gathered from the various pictures and posters hung around his office, he was a legit rocker guy and I feel this album would have been right in his wheelhouse. A nautical theme runs throughout it. It rocks at some points, it’s reflective in others. There is a suite of four songs, two at the beginning and two at the end that capture the vibe of the entire album. I picked the end of the last song in the suite as I feel it has a joyous, raucous sense of finality. Also, it lined up perfectly to me giggling because the cold ass water splashed all over me.

Upcoming events in Rob’s honor.

I’m in the very early planning stage of having some pinball competitions in Rob’s honor. What I’d like to do is have something like the “Rob Klug Open”, where there would be a months worth of events, held every weekend, with each event having a different format of playing.

If it weren’t for COVID-19, I’d be going full steam ahead to get things on peoples’ calendars. My first priority is to keep everyone safe; thus, if I can’t come up with a way to keep players from getting sick, then I can’t in good conscience proceed.

Things are going to get done, though! Competition is good – it brings out the vital parts. If you have any suggestions on how to pull this off, if you’re interested in hosting an event, if you just want to send some love to Rob, leave a comment below or email me privately at cornball1973 {at] gmail {dot} com.
